He will go, and quite rightly as well. Some of us know a player when we see one. Obvious after his first game. Never understood why some people resented him, guessing they took a dislike to Johnnybling bigging him up on here. Does seem like it might be his dad but good luck to him... No I know Wyll and his family having located to Barrow 15 years ago from Chester, my lad was in the same school team as Wyll, I suggested his transfer from Lancaster to Chester 18 months ago, just happens his agent is from Chester too, and a transfer was formulated- Wyll is undoubtedly an exceptional talent, however, as always we seem to bottle it when giving contracts longer than 12 months out. Not bigging him up I know from his Holker days how good he is, will be out loss when or if he leaves on a free come the end of season. The lad has earned the chance to play higher up the pyramid, however as stated before our mistake was not tying him down to longer than 12 months.

Wasn’t he on a 1 year deal with the club having an option on a second year. He was loaned out last season and only this season being a regular starter. Maybe the club have offered an extension but he does not have to sign if he believes his future is elsewhere

Don't disagree with your general opinions on players. I'm in the Lobster camp here in that we need more of clear out than just the odd first choice starter. The midfield balance hasn't been right. Weeks is under contract, the others aren't. Glendon and Whitehouse are both decent players, as is Murray, but not in the 4 with Weeks there too. Depending on their wage, Glendon goes first, as Whitehouse can cover more central and defensive midfield positions. That assumes we'll play more standard midfield set up. Regarding Caton and Peers, just because they're under contract doesn't mean they have to start. Releasing Taylor and Glendon releases money for strikers. It should be easier to bring in functional hardworking midfield players on a budget than good strikers. Same with fullbacks. The only issue with the “clear out” approach is that you have to be able to replace them with better players, it’s no good clearing out what you’ve got if the only available & affordable replacements aren’t as good as the players that have left. I think Cal knows that some of his recruitment wasn’t as good as it could have been but I do think that some of that is down to the players, Goodson, Taylor for example. I’m sure that he’ll have an idea of how to improve the side & the retained list will reflect that. Those were the sort of lines along which I was thinking. By all means, I’d happily be more ruthless if I thought we could bring in a player of Glendon’s calibre, for example, on a much lower wage, but I don’t think that’s particularly realistic. Not sure we always appreciate how fortunate we’ve been that the likes of him and Weeks have stayed loyal to us, continuing to play below their ‘natural’ level, for so long. I’m also still convinced that our main issue lies not with the personnel, but with the negative tactics that stifle their creativity. Not sure I’d be comfortable sacrificing some of the most technically-gifted players in the division and replacing them with a bunch of workhorses, just because they might be a better fit for a system that clearly needs changing anyway.

Can’t see Wyll staying, I have heard rumours of coming back home to Barrow, to replace Farman who is in his 30’s - also Dundee Utd have shown interest apparently. BIG mistake on not giving him a two year deal when I said we should have. We’ll get a development fee as long as we have offered him a contract by now should he sign elsewhere anyway

My opinion is I think National North is their level. They don't have the pace, or the physicality to play higher.

"Fortunate"? In case you hadn't noticed we're still in the National League North, having this season not even managed to finish inside the top seven. Despite both Weeks and Glendon being regular figures. Talented footballers they are, but the reality is that they've both failed here under multiple managers and are key parts of a losing culture. It was telling last season when Weeks for example had arguably his worst game in a Chester shirt against Brackley. The one game where we needed his talent the most and he vanished. In a way, that sums up his time here, good, but when we required them them to step up, they never have. It's time to part ways, for their sakes and ours. Give me a less talented player, but one who knows how to lead and how to win at all costs. It's those players who get you out of this division.

Similar age to Weeks and Glendon when he left us, and similar stats to the two of them so a good comparison.

It's a fair point, I could see either of the current two playing for top end conference teams. The main issue with Mcconville is we also had another player at that time who also wanted a free role, that prat who left us for those down the road. Both should've had the team built around them rather than shoe horning both into the same XI, and it's the same issue with Glendon and Weeks for me. I'd keep one of them and keep Murray as an understudy, then build a much more physical midfield to do the dirty work alongside them, and ideally they'd be over 5"9 to win a few headers. Watch the goals back from Monday and both start from losing headers in midfield.

Stanway Thomas Heywood Burke Williams Peers (although the jury's out for me Woodthorpe definitely has potential Roberts Glendon The rest can go I’m not too sure how many will actually want to stay. I’m sure plenty are really pissed off with the tactics and. The way the squad is set up. Every one of the players out of contract or uncontracted will have half an eye elsewhere. Now I know nothing but I’m not too sure Callum will be here either. His body language in interviews recently has not filled me with hope

Injuries and other factors erode ability, form and fitness Desire being a massive one of those factors. Personally feel Weeks has it, the others can go. He needs a big lad who can break up play alongside him and then we’ll see the player who we had last season. Yes he was poor against Brackley but nobody played well. Overall he was excellent last season, he’s been poor this season as he’s played out of position. Make him the fulcrum next time out (we’ll have no choice as he’s under contract) and get the right people alongside him.

I think the vast majority on here agree we are too lightweight, too small and lack width, that means players have to be moved out at the end of the season, doesn't have to be personal, it's an opinion formed after watching us this season. Whitehouse, Murray, Roberts and Glendon for me should go, there is no loyalty in football from players and Callum has to have the same mentality. We will probably have a similar budget again next season so squad wise maybe have 17/18 players before adding with loans or short term signings through next season so not a big squad, we have to be better, have a plan b and have players able to adapt to the muddy pitches in the winter, scrap and pick up 1-0 wins without playing particularly well, to hopefully playing some entertaining attacking football at home, giving the fans something to cheer about. I hope these rumours of players not wanting to play or stay who are under contract aren't true, Callum is under contract for 2 years, he has to learn, hopefully he does learn, adapt and bring in the right type of players to play for the football club, because another season of the same boring, slow build up style of football is something I couldn't tolerate.

Now our fate has been officially confirmed for next season, I’ve decided to do my retained/released list.
Contracted players: Charlie Caton.
I’m a bit on the fence with Charlie. Last season he made an excellent impact for us, as he played a key role in securing us a spot in the top three in the second-half of the campaign. However, this season has been a very frustrating one for Charlie injury-wise. He began the campaign quite brightly, most notably scoring in our FA Cup win at Hartlepool United, but after that he’s struggled to gain consistency, as niggle after niggle has blighted him. You could tell in games he’s featured in since the turn of the year that he hasn’t been his usual energetic self, which I hope isn’t the sign of a more prolonged injury. Hopefully he’ll have a good break in the Summer and can get back to full fitness, as Charlie can still be a crucial player for us providing he can cut the injuries out. I really want things to work out for him here.
Declan Weeks.
Dec was magnificent last season, as he had a bit of a free role which enabled him to shoot more often, and he was certainly on the scoresheet more often than this season. He did merit a contract extension at the time, but my eyebrows were raised when we extended his deal by three years. As a fan-owned club, we should not be giving even our best players such lengthy contracts, as it’s too risky, and I think we’re seeing some of the consequences of that in this case. It’s been frustrating to watch Declan this season, as he does too much on the ball without shooting, although I think it’s more due to our system, as we can’t accommodate him, George Glendon, and Elliott Whitehouse in a congested midfield. He’s played much deeper, so next campaign we need to see Dec get back to his best, by playing him further forward where he’d have more freedom to shoot.
Tom Peers.
I was delighted when we signed Tom, as since he graduated through our academy, he’s made a name for himself in non-league, so I was looking forward to seeing how he’d matured. Tom hasn’t been prolific for us yet, but I do feel for him, as we haven’t been playing to his strengths, while he hasn’t received regular service either. During the off-season, we need to look at Tom’s performances when he was banging them in for Curzon Ashton, and figure out how we can accommodate him here. With the right personnel around him, there’s no reason why he can’t bag 15+ goals next season.
Harrison Burke.
Burkenbauer has been immense again for us this campaign. He’s been played in numerous different positions, yet has rarely put a foot wrong - testament to his extreme talent. We’re very lucky to still have Burkey contracted for another two seasons, so providing a higher club doesn’t swoop for him, I’m excited to see him develop even further next campaign. Harrison is a huge asset to our club, as he’s a class act on the pitch, while he also helps out for our Community Trust off the pitch too.
Retained: Wyll Stanway.
Probably the most unlikely one on this list, but I’d be lying if I wouldn’t snap my hand off to keep Wyll. Wyll’s had an outstanding season in goal by keeping 21 clean sheets. There was a bit of pressure on him last Summer when being our number one again, straight after a full season out on loan, but Wyll has certainly excelled in filling into Harry Tyrer’s boots, or more aptly gloves! Wyll’s made a name for himself here, and will probably make a move to the EFL, as he isn’t on very much here, plus he fully deserves to be playing higher up. Carlisle United, Barrow, Morecambe, and Fleetwood Town would be realistic moves, given those clubs are pretty local to Wyll and his family. Whatever happens, I wish him every success, and it’s been a pleasure getting to know his lovely family, regardless of whether Wyll somehow stays here or not.
Matty Williams.
Matty is a strong shout for Player of the Season, as once again he’s been a rock at the back, and has played a key role in us keeping so many clean sheets. The likes of him and Wyll Stanway should take great credit in that tally, because if it weren’t for them and the rest of our defence, we’d have been further down the table due to our lack of firepower up front. We need to prioritise retaining Matty’s services in the Summer, however I wouldn’t begrudge him signing for a team higher up, as he deserves to have a crack at National League football. Hats off to Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley who snapped Matty up after an open trial event. He’s matured a lot in the last few seasons, and is at the stage of his career now where he needs to progress. I’d be delighted if we could keep him for another campaign though.
Iwan Murray.
Iwan divides opinion on here, but it’d be very harsh to not offer him a new deal. I think he’s come on a lot since last season, and has been one of our most improved players in my opinion. Last campaign he’d create the odd magical moment but would go missing after that, however I definitely think Iwan has been more consistent this time out. In recent games particularly, he’s put in a string of Man of the Match performances against South Shields and Gloucester City. He can give opposing defences nightmares with his creativity on the ball, and habit of winning free-kicks in dangerous positions. Iwan isn’t afraid to shoot either, unlike some of our other midfielders, so I’d definitely retain him over some of the bigger earners.
Adam Thomas.
Adam struggled with a couple of injuries at the start of the campaign, but in the second-half of it he’s shaken them off to become one of our more consistent performers. Because of our tactics, he’s another player I feel sorry for, as especially in home games, our system doesn’t cater for wingers like Adam. We’ve been too narrow and too congested in the middle, so in my opinion we need to be more expansive next campaign by using the width more. Adam’s a very talented player for this level, as shown in recent away games at Buxton and Gloucester City, where we did actually play with more width and freedom, so we need to play to his strengths next time around.
George Glendon.
It’d be harsh not to offer our Captain and top scorer a new contract during the Summer. George has recovered from such a long layoff very well, by being our top scorer from midfield, and he’s performed better than the rest of our midfield on the whole. Our midfield still needs a revamp though, which makes this one a hard one. Ideally, if we hadn’t given Declan Weeks such a lengthy deal, then regrettably I’d part ways with him after a disappointing season, but the reality is Weeksy is already contracted, so we need to find a way of getting him back to his best. I wouldn’t keep Elliott Whitehouse, who I’ll come on to later, but Glendon is worthy of being offered a new deal. Let’s see what happens.
Nathan Woodthorpe.
Nathan has made a mark in our side, as he’s been very solid and reliable since coming back from Marine in January. He hasn’t put a foot wrong and will only keep on improving, so I’d definitely offer him a new deal.
Reece Daly.
Quite surprised we haven’t seen more of Reece to be honest, since that screamer he scored against Peterborough Sports. He’s a very talented young player, who for me has deserved to feature more than some of our more experienced midfielders, especially during the second-half of the season. Hoping we’ll put a contract on the table for him.
Kieran Coates.
Kieran has had a very similar season to Charlie Caton, in the sense that it’s been ravaged by injuries. I’d reluctantly give him a new deal, providing he can be fully fit, as injuries aside, he’s a fantastic right-back for this league. Another big decision for Calum McIntyre to make, and I’m glad I’m not the one that makes these decisions 😅😬.
Kevin Roberts.
The last player on my retained list is super Kev. I still think Kevin has one more season left in the tank for us, albeit he wouldn’t be starting every week. We actually tend to play better when Kev’s in our side, and he can still operate in a multitude of positions. Notwithstanding his vocalness on the pitch, and a lack of leadership has been one of our problems this season, so we need more players like Kev. He also does some Physio work, so would make sense to give him another year.
Released: Joel Taylor.
Our biggest under-performer has to be Joel Taylor. We were all understandably very excited when we re-signed Joel last Summer, as he was tremendous in his first spell, but he’s been the shadow of his former self I’m afraid. He’s too scared to go forward, and is quite limited at the back as well when trying to stop crosses. His display at Scunthorpe United was bad, when he was ghosted by two of their players for both of their goals. Joel has improved in recent weeks, but it’s too little too late unfortunately. I really wanted things to work out, but it’s best for both parties to move on now, and we have a solid left-back in Nathan Woodthorpe waiting in the wings. It’s another case of Ross Hannah and Kingsley James, in the sense that things just haven’t gone to plan second time around.
Christian Norton.
Christian has failed to make any real sort of impact here. He scored the first goal of his career against Bishop’s Stortford late on, and it clearly meant a lot to him, however he’s only found the net once since then. Can’t fault his effort or work rate, but we need to find better strikers if we want to get promoted. Christian’s a likeable lad, but it’s time to move on.
Kole Hall.
Kole just hasn’t been the same since his return from injury - hence we loaned him out to Scarborough Athletic. Prior to that, he shown some nice flashes, but was too inconsistent in my opinion. Kole’s another likeable lad who I’ll wish well for the future, but similar to Christian Norton, hasn’t been good enough. He scored twice and assisted once in Scarborough’s last gasp win against King’s Lynn Town recently, so perhaps he’ll join The Seadogs permanently.
Liam Edwards.
Liam is a more-than-capable player for this league, but he too has been victim to a few injuries along the way, which may explain his absence from our squad in recent weeks. He can make the odd mistake at times, but I’d say he’s been pretty solid if not unspectacular overall. Due to said-injuries though, it’d be risky to offer him a new deal, so I’d stick my head above the parapet and release Liam.
Elliott Whitehouse.
For me, this was the hardest choice when doing my released list. Elliott was brilliant for us last campaign, but for me has underperformed this time out. He has put in some great hardworking performances here and there, but just hasn’t been consistent enough for my liking. If we want to widen our midfield up a bit, then at least somebody has to go, and I’m afraid that guy is Elliott for me, especially given Declan Weeks is contracted, plus it’d be very harsh to release George Glendon. Elliott would walk into any other side in this league, but due to our midfield being so congested, it just hasn’t worked out as well as we thought it would this season. Another hard decision for Calum McIntyre to make.
Ollie Heywood.
I’d release Ollie more due to his lack of game time than ability. Ollie’s a really nice lad, and is another academy product to celebrate, however the reality is he’s third in our left-back pecking order. I don’t really see the point in us retaining him just to send him out on loan again, so I think it’d be best if he joins another club permanently, with the assurance that he’d start regularly. Whenever he has featured for us, he’s been pretty solid in general and has always grafted really hard. Good ambassador off the pitch too. Again I’d wish Ollie well if it were to be pastures new.
Jake Burton.
Staggering that this lad is still on our books. I’ll actually admit that I was quietly excited by this signing last Summer, as a fair few Tranmere Rovers fans gave him positive reviews, and said that he’d do well in the National League!! However, other than the odd cameo in pre-season, we haven’t seen Jake at all, plus the fact he hasn’t set the world alight at Marine or Bootle is pretty telling.
Kai Calderbank-Park.
Crazily, this guy is technically still contracted as well, despite being at Ramsbottom United on a dual-registration. Get rid.
Loan players: Ben Tollitt.
Realistically Ben will go back to Oldham Athletic, especially now their fate in the National League was confirmed last night. I’d love us to secure him on a permanent basis, as he can be very creative and dynamic on the ball. Ben isn’t afraid to shoot either - just look at those impressive goals against Farsley Celtic and Scunthorpe United. In most home games Ben has looked rather lost and isolated, which again is down to our poor tactics and us being unable to play to his strengths. Sadly though, he’s too good for this league, and he’d be a big earner as well, so unfortunately I can’t see him staying.
Kieran Burton.
I think we should be pushing the boat out to sign Kieran on a permanent basis, especially if Matty Williams leaves, and we release Liam Edwards. Burton has been solid on the whole, as he’s got height on his side (which helps when winning aerial duals), plus he’s not afraid to go up for corners, which is exactly what we need in those situations. My one gripe is that he can sometimes be a bit rash with his decision-making, but that’s something that could be worked on over time. I’d be happy if we could somehow keep him.

Now our fate has been officially confirmed for next season, I’ve decided to do my retained/released list. Contracted players:Charlie Caton.I’m a bit on the fence with Charlie. Declan Weeks.Dec was magnificent last season, as he had a bit of a free role which enabled him to shoot more often, and he was certainly on the scoresheet more often than this season. Tom Peers.I was delighted when we signed Tom, as since he graduated through our academy, he’s made a name of himself in non-league, so I was looking forward to seeing how he’d matured. Harrison Burke.Burkenbauer has been immense again for us this campaign. Retained:Wyll Stanway.Probably the most unlikely one on this list, but I’d be lying if I wouldn’t snap my hand off to keep Wyll. Matty Williams.Matty is a strong shout for Player of the Season, as once again he’s been a rock at the back, and has played a key role in us keeping so many clean sheets. Iwan Murray.Iwan divides opinion on here, but it’d be very harsh to not offer him a new deal. Adam Thomas.Adam struggled with a couple of injuries at the start of the campaign, but in the second-half of it he’s shaken them off to become one of our more consistent performers. Nathan Woodthorpe.Nathan has made a mark in our side, as he’s been very solid and reliable since coming back from Marine in January. He hasn’t put a foot wrong and will only keep on improving, so I’d definitely offer him a new deal. Reece Daly.Quite surprised we haven’t seen more of Reece to be honest, since that screamer he scored against Peterborough Sports. He’s a very talented young player, who for me has deserved to feature more than some of our more experienced midfielders, especially during the second-half of the season. Hoping we’ll put a contract on the table for him. Kieran Coates.Kieran has had a very similar season to Charlie Caton, in the sense that it’s been ravaged by injuries. Released:Joel Taylor. Christian Norton.Christian has failed to make any real sort of impact here. He scored the first goal of his career against Bishop’s Stortford late on, and it clearly meant a lot to him, however he’s only found the net once since then. As I said above, it’s probably best for him to join another club where he’d be guaranteed regular football. He’s definitely good enough for this league though. All depends on whether we get rid of Joel Taylor, and decide on whether to start Nathan Woodthorpe, or to bring another quality left-back in.
